Sher Singh Rana History
Sher Singh Rana, a politician and convicted killer who was born into a Rajput family, was responsible for the 2001 assassination of Indian dacoit-turned-parliamentarian Phoolan Devi. He was captured in 2006 at Dharamtalla in Kolkata by the Special Cell of the Delhi Police after making it out of Tihar Jail in 2004 and arriving at the mausoleum of Prithviraj Chauhan. He wrote a book titled Jail Diary: Tihar Se Kabul-Kandhar Tak.
Rana was found guilty of conspiring to kill Devi and was given a life sentence and a fine of 100,000 rupees (about $1,600) in August 2014 following a 10-year trial.
On February 17, 2004, Rana managed to escape the jail with the aid of a buddy named Sandeep, who claimed to be a police officer, and drove Rana to a Hardwar court. He traveled to Moradabad and made hotel reservations.
His family members got in touch with him and sent him Rs. 1 lakh via Sandeep. He submitted an application for a passport in Ranchi under the name Sanjay Gupta.

He traveled to Gaya and Benaras during the two-month wait for the passport, when he met Subhash Thakur, his “financier,” who was later imprisoned nearby. Rana then traveled to Kolkata and received a three-month visa for Bangladesh. According to Rana, he rented a home in Khulna and pretended to be Sanjay while residing there.
He spent Rs. 16,500 for a satellite phone after running away to Bangladesh so he could stay in touch with his loved ones and friends without being discovered. Throughout his voyage, which took him from Moradabad via Ranchi, Kolkata, Bangladesh, and Dubai to Afghanistan,
he reportedly received between Rs. 15,000 and Rs. 20,000 per month in personal expenses from Subhash Thakur’s suspected cohorts in crime in Uttar Pradesh. Rana stayed in Kolkata when his visa was extended and also it did in the Dhaka

After that, Sher Singh Rana flew from Dhaka to Dubai and then on to Kabul. He intended to return the remains of Hindu monarch Prithviraj Chauhan, who was interred in Afghanistan, to India as part of a patriotic mission.
On the outskirts of Ghazni in Afghanistan’s Deak hamlet, Rana claimed to have collected artifacts and sand from the king’s tomb. Additionally, he had a monument constructed at Etawah, Uttar Pradesh. According to Kanpur Police, a monument that would house Prithviraj Chauhan’s shrine was built using the bones.
